GOD YES? GOD NO?

Hello subscribername,

My heading is irrelevant as one cannot prove the existence of God nor for that matter disprove the existence of God.

I have always claimed that the belief in anything is the beginning of a person's inability to think further than what he has been told by others.

A student of mine received an email from a friend with the following little story. My student wanted to know my thoughts from a yogic point of view on what is mentioned in this story.

The email my student received is as follows:

A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not respond to the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, doe s darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man's name -- Albert Einstein

There is no documented truth to this story - yet even if there were, the argument has been taken on two different levels, one within the attributable state of consciousness and the other on the abstract level of consciousness.

In Pure Consciousness, without attributes, which is expressed in Yoga as Chit, of course there is no good or evil, heat or cold, but in impure, or attributable consciousness, we do have heat and cold and all the degrees in between where the actual cold becomes the actual heat.

These opposites are all controlled by the law of duality. There are degrees of opposites in everything.

In all these discussions about God one forgets one of the most important words, and that is infinity, which means endless - endless space. Endless time, endless quality. Due to infinity, there cannot be an end and by the law of duality, there cannot be a beginning.

This infinity has always existed. It is just we, as the collective human mind, are now discovering what has always been.

In the very beginnings of our human consciousness, we were very limited in our understanding of the world, and so a shaft of lightening or a roll of thunder was a great amazement to us. We in fact made gods of these forces plus many others.

The god of the volcano was revered for centuries and centuries of young virgins hearts were cut out on the volcanic alter with her body to be thrown into the fiery pit below.

Whatever man could not understand, he made a god out of it.

Today we still have minds like that. Minds which cannot think, and because of it billions of people all over the world still suckle their superstitious thumb into their incapable and intractable ability of their overemotional superstitious sentiments, which have been passed down to them from thousands of years back - and, all this in the face of advancing knowledge.

It seems easier to hang on to the emotional argument rather than doing a little thinking about this timeless state that is in existence. This timeless existence is called Sat.

There cannot have been a god which created the universe. It is an impossibility. It has always existed.

Even science can make detours in their thinking, but at least in making changes, they realize that the science is more important that the hanging on to one or another outdated beliefs or scientific factors.

Today there are a number of physicists who are stating there was not a big bang - no theory could have existed because they have found evidence of numerous big bangs, which existed in this timeless state of eternity. Each one of them only affecting that particular space contained within the infinity of the universe itself.

It would be much like one snowflake melting in a snow storm, one after the other. Big Bangs are going on all the time. It is just that in this infinite Time, they happen billions of light years apart, to our finite minds.

Even given the religionists point, that the universe was created by a God, he only used four great laws to uphold it. This entire universe, from the smallest to the largest is held together by four great laws - the Strong Force, the Weak Force, Magnetism, and Gravity.

Once these forces were created to bring the world into existence, the creator of them was not needed any more. Any change in these four forces would change what we know of the Universe into something else entirely. So even if a God had created the universe, he is now of no value.

But that is beside the point, because the universe has always existed in infinity and a timeless state, those four laws, and all the sub laws that come out of them have always been in existence also. So you see it is quite impossible to even think that there was a beginning. No beginning - no God.

You can use all the semantics and emotional arguments you like, but any serious thinker who wants to find the truth out for himself, will not rely on the knowledge of old superstitious texts.

Sometimes people will set you up in argument that cannot be one, as no matter which way you answer you will be culpable. For instance:

The Lawyer having a witness on the stand will ask. "Just answer me yes or no. have you stopped beating your wife?"

If the man is known to be guilty and he answers yes, he looks good to the jury, but if the man is innocent of beating his wife, he looks bad to the jury no matter whether he answers yes or no.

So begin to chuck out everything you know and begin to think about everything from what we know today.

Whether God exists or not is unimportant.

All the old religions are myths, fables and half truths.

All were needed at the time - either to teach cleanliness, morality for those days, but mainly for the power held by the Church itself. And to think it is all of you that "give it the power."
